The Danger of Idleness
“And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.” 2 Samuel 11:1
Winter was over, spring had come, and there were battles to fight. We aren’t given the specifics of why King David chose not to go to battle, so we have to use our imagination. Maybe he was simply tired and weary. After all, he had fought in many previous battles, so this time he was ready to let someone else bear his load. But his mindset placed him in greater danger than the battlefield ever would have.
This seemingly harmless choice spiraled into devastating consequences. David’s idleness opened the door to temptation. In his “spare time,” he strolled leisurely on the rooftop and failed to guard his wandering eyes. This led to adultery with Bathsheba and the orchestrated death of her husband Uriah. What a tragedy, all because King David chose not to go to battle!
Ezekiel 16:49 – “Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.”
This scripture is another reminder of what happens when people become idle. The prophet Ezekiel was exposing one of the major sins of Sodom: an abundance of idleness! What a tragic ending for the whole city when God rained down fire and brimstone.
My daddy was an old-time preacher, and he would often say, “An idle mind is the enemy’s playground.” He would encourage weary Christians to guard their minds against idleness. I have never forgotten his words, and the concept of his message rings louder in my mind today as spiritual warfare is greater than ever!
The lesson for us is clear: this is no time to let down our guard in spiritual warfare because the enemy of our soul never rests. Many ministries, homes, and lives have fallen into ruin, not because of overwhelming opposition, but because someone chose to “sit still” when they should have been up about the Father’s business.
I completely understand that the temptation to relax spiritually is very strong! The enemy whispers, “You prayed through yesterday. You’ve read the Bible from cover to cover. You know what it says. Just coast along for a while and give your mind a break from daily spiritual discipline.”
But let me remind you that a victorious life only comes through daily watchfulness, prayer, and obedience. May God help us recognize where King David’s great sin started: idleness. The abundance of idleness didn’t work for him or for Sodom and Gomorrah. Neither will it be overlooked for us today. Truly, the danger of sitting still in battle is greater than the weariness of fighting.
Precious child of God, please let me encourage you: do not sit down. Don’t allow the enemy to convince you that your part doesn’t matter. Stay faithful and alert. Rise up, regardless of how tired you may be or how insignificant your fight may feel. Shake yourself! Put on the whole armor of God and experience the victory that is just ahead!
Soon, we all will lay our armor down and fight no more. But until then, we must be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. We must fight the good fight of faith! We must stay committed to our marching orders. The church of Jesus Christ is an unstoppable force when every soldier is engaged, every intercessor is praying, and every witness for Jesus is shining brightly.
Let us fight and be brave against all evil. We cannot run or lag behind. Our last battle is almost won and we are going home! Be encouraged today and fight on, soldier!
